Small Groups and Our Children

January 10, 2013

There’s a book out there by Dean, Almost Christian, which tries to address the reason(s) why so many young people have fled from church. Her conclusion is interesting. Most of the kids that walk away have done so because Christianity was presented to them as not requiring any sacrifice, therefore not being worth anything. The ones that stay are the ones that have seen it costs something, but the costs are worth it.

There is a direct tie-in to small groups. Kids that see their parents involved in their church conclude that church is a worthwhile investment. Small groups in most churches are a significant way to get involved, and provide a launching pad for other means of involvement (i.e., our small group did Operation Christmas Child, etc.).
