Changes Over the Decades

November 5, 2012

My wife and I have been doing small groups long enough now to see several changes in philosophy. What’s the most noteworthy one? In my opinion, the biggest and best change is the whole movement away from the idea that groups should always be splitting or dividing (or multiplying or exponentiating–about the only mathematical operation we’re missing is subtraction; probably just a marketing thing, don’t you think?). If one of the most important benefits of small groups is the opportunity to develop deep friendships, it’s a little difficult when the groups keep changing members.

What’s the worst? I would have to say the proliferation of video materials. We’ve tried them and I think we’re going back to more discussion-based methods. If the goal is fellowship, most of the videos don’t facilitate that. Having said that, there are a few exceptions.
