Another Benefit of Small Groups

October 15, 2012

Here’s another benefit of being in a small group:

Being in community can tangibly make you a more mature person, since it can shine the light on areas of personal weakness. Living in community forces some character weaknesses out of your own personal “closet” and brings them front and center in your awareness.

“So what you’re saying, Mike, is that small groups can be a test at times?”

Yes, that’s exactly what I’m saying. I’m thinking specifically of areas of selfishness or immaturity that don’t come to light when you’re not with others. It’s easy to think you’re generous, patient, a good listener, gracious, or any number of other virtues when you are not called upon to use them. But how do you know until you put those virtues to the test, and how do you build those character traits without practicing them? The simple answer is you don’t.

So not only do you get the benefit of building friendships, etc., etc., but you also become a more mature person.
